GNU is a computer operating system having Unix as a component much like Microsoft Windows in function but opposite in marketing philosophy. The GNU Project, is a project to produce free software for the GNU operating system. To get a better understanding of
Richard Stallman's original concept of FREE Software , please read comments on the subject for enlightenment. FREE Software means “It's free software and it gives you freedom!" It should not be FREE as in FREE BEER. Many man hours and even peoples lives have been dedicated to evolving and developing this concept of software freedom.
It merits mention to point out that an ethical user of such profound software would easily find it in his or her heart to make a financial contribution toward each such software package used under this graceful license of development. For this reason, the webhost EZwebstart, in addition to your contributions, makes ongoing contributions from its proceeds toward the continued development of software freedom, freedom for you and for me. These contributions are made in proportion to the software packages actually being used by the EZwebstart community.
The important point I think Mr. Stallman has been making is that the development, possession and use of software should give us the freedom to use, develop, distribute and otherwise foster the continued propagation, growth and development of all such software.
In terms of compensation for the efforts of these developers, that part should be obvious. Perhaps Mr. Bill Gates is right (philosophically) in that there are more takers in the world than givers. Without mandatory payment, there are many moochers who will be more than happy to simply take from this generous community of software developers and steal a FREE ride. I would like to think that everyone would at least make a small contribution but more aptly one which is commensurate with their means.
It was not my original intention to editorialize here, but this is really what all these "FREE" resources are all about. Enjoy, hopefully with a clear conscience.
